fly fishing alaska trips
One month trip around Alaska: how much can I expect to spend?

I am considering a trip around Alaska for a month next summer. I haven’t made an exact itinerary, but I do plan on hiking around Denali park, seeing some glaciers, doing some salmon fishing, and skiing possibly. It’s my intention to travel around a good area of Alaska (through ferry, hiking, flying), so there will definitely be a variety of lodging (camping, hotel, lodge, etc.). If anyone has done a similar excursion around Alaska, how much did it cost you total for the time period? I’ve only allocated about $4000 for a trip ($3000 after airfare to Alaska), but I’m really hoping I can afford exploring Alaska with this amount of money. Like I said, I haven’t detailed exactly what I am going to do, but I want to make sure $4000 is a reasonable enough to even consider Alaska. Thanks for any input!

If I were you I would estimate about $200/day. I have found this a really good average for trips like this. This does not include airfare, but does include meals, lodging, special excursions, short flights, etc.

fishing hilo hawaii
Surf fishing near Hilo Hawaii no idea what the proper gear would be please help.?

I was thinking about trying one of the newer button casting reels that look like small deep sea reels, but I’m used to the conventional bail casters. And even then i have no idea if that would work for surf fishing in Hawaii. I’m a very experienced fisherman here on the main land but i’ve never been to Hawaii. And i like a fight i normally go for kings with a light weight 7’0 rod. Please be specific thanks a lot.

Surf fishing in Hawaii usually involves heavy Ulua rods, medium to heavy spinners and lightweight whipping poles.

Heavy Ulua rods are used to catch Ulua (giant trevally). Uluas are anywhere from 10 – 100+ pounds. The heavy rods are 13 feet long, reels are 4/0 or 6/0 conventional reels, the lines are 60-80 lbs test, and the lead weight is about 8-10 ounces. Live or cut bait is used.

Most casual fishing from the shoreline is done with medium to large spinning rigs. A typical rig would be a 9-10 ft. medium-heavy pole with a large spinning reel loaded with 30-40 lb. test. Cut bait of squid, frozen shrimp or octopus is often used. The bait is casted with a 5 ounce lead and dunked, leaving the pole in the pole hodler, attaching a bell to the pole, and cracking open a beer. Most fish would not put up much of a fight, but you could find yourself outgunned by a 80 lb Ulua with such a rig.

Your 7 ft. light pole could be used for whipping, which is similar to bass fishing. You cast out your lure and retrieve it. Curly tails, kastmasters, poppers and spoons are used to fish the shoreline in Hawaii. Your primary target fish would be Papio (juvenile trevally), oio (bone fish), awa awa (lady fish, like a tarpon) and barracuda. Your typical Hawaii shoreline predators.

One interesting observation is that small casting reels are hardly ever seen in Hawaii. I don’t know why. I suppose it’s just easier to use spinning reels. Conventional reels are usually only used for big game fishing.

deep sea fishing philippines
Deep Sea Fishing Tours?

Are there any public deep sea fishing tours available in the Philippines? Half day or full day trips? How much and where? Equipment provided?

Yes, in Siargao. Thru the Pansukian Resort.

According to their website:

“Pansukian can organize a half-day or whole-day fishing expedition with Siargao’s best fisherman, Junior Gonzalez, who can provide the boat, fishing equipment and bait. This, of course, depends on Junior’s availability and the condition of the waves.

Year round, you can catch fish like jack and giant trevally weighing as much as 40 to 50 kilos. Around the payaos (artificial fish shelters), you’ll find small yellow fin tuna (around two to five kilos), skipjack tuna, durado, and, if you’re lucky, marlin! Night fishing around the payaos can net about 100 kilos of squid, depending on your skill.”

They provide all equipment, and all you need to do is make the reservations. Inquire about costs, and reserve, thru this link:
