3.5 Horse, or 4 horse? Outboard Engine, Small boat?
We are looking at getting an outboard small engine for our 11 foot flatbottom boat, How fast would a 3.5 horse go? Would it really be that much less than a 4 horse? (About what mph would one of these go in still water?) I would go larger, but we are already exceeding our weight limit of 350lbs in the boat… The 3.5 horse weighs 37lbs, and the 4 horse, weighs 59..
What should we get?
How fast would a 3.5 go?
How much faster would a 4 go?
Thanks a lot.
I’d go with the 3.5
.5 hp won’t get you much more speed, and isn’t really worth the weight.
As for speed, are many factors that effect it… But I’d guess around 20?
Besides, where do you plan to be going so fast in an 11′ boat?

2 Stroke Questions. Mercury OptiMax 150. Break in period. Beeping while cruising. Grinding when put in gear.
To start out, the boat is a tri-toon with a Mercury OptiMax 150 on it and both are new.
When i am accelerating sometimes there is a beeping alert around 6000 RPM. It seems like it comes on when raise the trim from all the way down to mid level or flat. (That makes me want to believe it is not the warning for the engine not getting water pumped in to cool it)
Also, when i go from neutral to forward and reverse there is a short grinding sound from the outboard when it engages. It only grinds for a second and then everything is great. Is that noise normal for engaging into fwd/reverse?
Since it is a 2 stroke can i run it at full throttle without damaging it? With a 24 foot tri-toon, what should be the top speed on glass?
Is there any break in period? If so what do i need to do? 87 octane? Anything else i should know about the 2 stroke? (besides oil)
I know there are lots of questions but i couldnt find the proper online forum. Thanks to all in advance for your answers!
OK I ASSUME THE MOTORS A 2006- 7 IN WHICH CASE THERE IS NO BREAK IN PERIOD.AS FOR THE SHIFTING NOISE IT SOUNDS TO ME THAT YOUR “GRANNY SHIFTING” YOU SHOULD SHIFT FIRMLY AND QUICKLY FROM NUETRAL. NOT SLOWLY. NOW THE ENGINE ALARM MAY BE FROM A TEMP SENSOR. IS IT RUNNING HOT? WHAT I THINK IT IS, IS AN OVER REV ALARM. I THINK 6000 RPM’S MAY BE HIGH. CHECK THE BOOK. I THINK MAX RPM’S IS 5800. THE BOOK WILL ALSO GIVE YOU THE PROPER OCTANE GAS TO USE.

Invest in a service and repair manual, if you are going to keep this motor. It will pay for itself, when you complete this first repair.
